A three-year surveillance study from March 2017 to February 2020 in Kolkata has found an amoeba pathogen that previously did not cause any amoebiasis (a form of diarrhoea) in humans has now become pathogenic.
Researchers from the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) in Kolkata found that more than half of the amoebic infections in humans were caused by this newly pathogenic E. moshkovskii, replacing the previously predominant pathogen, E. histolytica.
The study analyzed stool samples from diarrheal patients in Kolkata, identifying mutations in the pathogenic parasite that indicate its adaptation to the human gut environment or acquisition of other enteric pathogens.
The results of the study were published in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Diarrhea can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and amoeba pathogens. T
The study found that nearly 5% of patients with diarrhea had infections caused by different Entamoeba species, with over 3% infected with E. moshkovskii.
