War Memorial In Bangladesh UPSC NOTE

 Why in News

Bangladesh is building memorial to honour Indian heroes of 1971 war.

1971 War

  • The Bangladesh Liberation War, also known as the Muktijuddho.

  • Its was a revolution and armed conflict sparked by the rise of the Bengali nationalist and self-determination movement in East Pakistan.

  •  Which resulted in the independence of Bangladesh.

  • The war began on March 26, 1971, after the Pakistani military launched Operation Searchlight

  • Searchlight is  crackdown on Bengali nationalists in East Pakistan. 

  • The crackdown resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Bengalis and the displacement of millions more.

  • In response to the crackdown, Bengali nationalists formed the Mukti Bahini.

  • It’s a  guerrilla army that fought against the Pakistani military. 

  • The Mukti Bahini was supported by India, which provided them with weapons and training.

  • The war ended on December 16, 1971.

  • Pakistani military surrendered to the joint forces of the Mukti Bahini and India. 

  • The war resulted in the deaths of an estimated 3 million people and the displacement of 10 million more.

  • This War was a significant event in South Asian history. 

  • It led to the creation of Bangladesh, a new independent nation.

  • The war also had a profound impact on India-Pakistan relations, which remain tense to this day.

Ashuganj location

  • Ashuganj or Ashugonj is a town in the Brahmanbaria District of Chittagong Division of Bangladesh.

  •  Its in the Meghna River delta. 

  • Its altitude is 10 meters. 

  • The city is known for the Port of Ashuganj and for its power plant which generates much of the electricity for the country, especially for the capital city.
