 Why in News

  • BRO on Saturday clarified that the ongoing road project to the Amarnath cave shrine was towiden the tracks for pedestrian traffic, keeping in view the environmental concerns.

  • The court in 2012 issued the directions for sufficient widening of tracks to facilitate pedestrian traffic and address congestion on the track, improvement of critical stretches of the existing track, provide safety railings and retaining walls along the vulnerable stretches etc. keeping in view the environmental concerns.

  • BRO is a road construction and maintenance force in India. 

  • It was established in 1960 to improve the infrastructure in the border areas of the country.

  • The BRO is responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and tunnels in some of the most challenging terrain in the world.

  • It has constructed and maintained roads in some of the most remote and inaccessible parts of the country.

BRO Missions

  • Construction of the Rohtang Pass tunnel in Himachal Pradesh, which provides all-weather connectivity to the Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

  • Construction of the Dhola Sadiya Bridge in Assam, which is the longest bridge in Asia over the Brahmaputra River.

  • Construction of the Sela Pass tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, which will provide all-weather connectivity to the Tawang district.

  • Construction of the Zojila Pass tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, which will provide all-weather connectivity to the Ladakh region.

Significance of Border Roads Organisation
