Why in News
After a deepfake video clip of actor Rashmika Mandanna went viral on social media platforms such as Instagram.
The Electronics and Information Technology Ministry on Tuesday sent notices to “all social media intermediaries”, reminding them that online impersonation is illegal under Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
AI deepfake concerns
Deepfakes are a type of synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else's likeness.
Deepfakes can be used to create and spread false information, making it difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is fake. This could have a significant impact on public discourse and trust in institutions.
Deepfakes can be used to create non-consensual pornography, which can be deeply distressing and humiliating for the victim. They can also be used to create videos that bully or harass individuals.
Deepfakes can be used to manipulate people into doing things they would not otherwise do, such as clicking on phishing links or revealing personal information.
