People fleeing to Chad have reported a new surge in ethnically-driven killings in Sudan’s Darfur as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took over the main Army base in El Geneina.
On Tuesday, refugees said they witnessed killings by Arab militias and RSF targeting the Masalit ethnic group in Ardamata.
Masalit Ethnic Group
The Masalit people are an ethnic group in Chad and Sudan.
They are one of the largest ethnic groups in Chad, with a population of over 1 million people.
The Masalit are divided into two main subgroups: the Masalit proper and the Zaghawa.
The Masalit are traditionally nomadic pastoralists, but many have settled in towns and cities in recent years.
They are primarily Muslim, but some Masalit also practice African religions..
