Why in news
Researchers found out that, sometimes, when an elephant makes a vocalisation to a group of other elephants, all of them respond.
Yet, sometimes, when that same elephant makes a similar call to the group, only a single individual responds.
Researchers says that could be that elephants address each other by the equivalent of a name
The researchers analysed vocalisations — mostly rumbles generated by elephants using their vocal cords, similar to how people speak — made by more than 100 elephants in Amboseli National Park and Samburu National Reserve.
Amboseli National Park & Samburu National Reserve
Located southeast of Nairobi, Kenya, Amboseli National Park is well known for its herds of big tusked elephants.
A scenic park in its own right, Amboseli is synonymous with two particular things – majestic herds of elephant and glorious views of Mount Kilimanjaro in neighbouring Tanzania.
The Samburu National Reserve is a game reserve on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro river in Kenya.
