The Supreme Court requested a full report on the establishment and functioning of gram nyayalayas (village courts) in India.
Goal of Gram Nyayalayas:
The Gram Nyayalayas Act, 2008 was enacted to provide for the establishment of Gram Nyayalayas at the grassroots level
Provide affordable and speedy justice to people in rural areas.
Reduce burden on local courts by handling smaller cases.
Current Status:
Introduced by law 16 years ago.
Target: 16,000 courts.
Actual number: Only around 450 set up, with about 300 functional.
Supreme Court's Concern:
Justice B.R. Gavai emphasized the importance of gram nyayalayas in ensuring access to justice for all citizens, especially those in rural areas.
Next Steps:
States and High Courts must submit fresh reports within six weeks detailing the establishment and functioning of gram nyayalayas.
Supreme Court hearing on the matter is scheduled for September 11, 2024.
