The Union Sports Ministry is working on a National Sports Governance Bill to strengthen India's sports ecosystem.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing preparations for hosting the 2036 Olympics.
Stakeholders and the public are invited to provide feedback on the draft policy until October 25.
Objective of the Bill
To enhance transparency, accountability, and integrity in sports management, fostering a vibrant ecosystem that supports athletic excellence.
Establish a Sports Regulatory Board: To monitor sports governance in India, ensuring oversight of National Olympic Committees (NOC) and National Sports Federations (NSF).
The bill promotes a self-regulatory framework for better governance.
The age limit for office-bearers is relaxed, allowing individuals below 70 years at the time of election.
A cooling-off period of four years is introduced after two consecutive terms, with no cap on total terms.
Formation of Athletes Commissions in sports bodies to ensure athletes' representation and involvement in decision-making.
The commission will address development, grievances, and support for athletes beyond their competitive careers.
Limit the NSF executive council to 15 members, including two outstanding sportspersons and two members from the Athletes Commission.
Establish a Sports Election Panel with retired Election Commission members to oversee NOC and NSF elections.
Create a tribunal with civil court powers for swift resolution of sports-related disputes.
