Sri Lanka’s recent parliamentary election has resulted in a resounding victory for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People's Power (NPP) coalition.
Recent Parliamentary Election & NPP's Mandate
The JVP-led National People's Power (NPP) coalition, which includes civil society groups and trade unions, secured 159 seats in the 225-member Sri Lankan Parliament
The NPP’s performance represents a major shift in Sri Lanka’s politics, with growing support from all sections of society, including Tamils, Muslims, and hill-country Tamils
NPP’s victory is seen as a rejection of the old political order, following the 2022 citizen uprisings and frustrations over economic hardships
Anura Kumara Dissanayake, NPP leader, has gained widespread support, and his victory in the election builds on his presidential win in September.
The NPP’s rise from just 3 seats in 2020 to a two-thirds majority now demonstrates significant political momentum and a demand for sweeping reforms.
Despite this mandate, Dissanayake will need to build broad unity across all ethnic and political groups to address the country’s challenges and fulfill promises like the abolition of the executive presidency and creating a new Constitution.
