Why in news
The Cabinet approved two Bills for implementing simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
One Bill amends the Constitution to allow simultaneous elections, while the other adjusts laws for Union Territories with Legislative Assemblies to align their terms with other Assemblies.
Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Chief Ministers criticized the Bills, calling them attacks on democracy and federalism.
The Bills will be introduced in Parliament, likely referred to a joint committee, but won’t require State ratification.
The Cabinet decided not to address simultaneous elections for local bodies (municipalities/panchayats), which would have required a Constitutional amendment.
