India-Bangladesh relations have been strained due to attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus, and Bangladesh’s anger over perceived Indian interference, particularly regarding PM Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s one-day visit to Dhaka aimed to engage with the interim government of Professor Yunus, addressing concerns on both sides.
Tensions were worsened by protests in both countries, including the arrest of a Hindu monk in Bangladesh, which led to attacks on Indian missions and cultural centers.
Misri emphasized India’s desire to work closely with Bangladesh, while Yunus described the relationship as “solid” and urged India to help resolve tensions caused by Hasina’s statements.
Discussions included border management, trade, connectivity, energy cooperation, and people-to-people ties, with both sides agreeing on the importance of a consultative partnership.
India must address domestic concerns like minority protection while engaging diplomatically with Bangladesh’s new government to stabilize ties and ensure regional stability.
