India's Fisheries Growth and Importance
India’s fisheries resources support approximately 3 crore fishers and fish farmers.
Fish production has increased by 83% since 2013-14, reaching 175 lakh tons in 2022-23.
75% of production comes from inland fisheries, making India the second-largest fish producer globally.
Strengthening fisheries and aquaculture extension services is crucial for sustainable growth.
Role of Matsya Seva Kendras (MSKs)
MSKs are part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, providing one-stop services for fishers and fish farmers.
These centers offer services on fish species, water quality, disease management, and rearing technologies.
Government funds up to 60% for MSK setup, especially targeting women and weaker sections.
102 MSKs have been operationalized across states and Union Territories.
Example: MSK in Kerala offers disease tests, while MSKs in Maharashtra focus on capacity building for fishers.
Sagar Mitras' Support for Fishers
Sagar Mitras are deployed in coastal regions as intermediaries between the government and marine fishers.
They collect and disseminate data on marine catch, price fluctuations, regulations, weather, and calamities.
They provide information on fish handling and help identify productive fishing zones.
Improving Extension Services
To enhance extension services, integrate initiatives with existing field extension networks like Krishi Vigyan Kendras and state extension services.
Promote digital outreach through platforms like ‘AquaBazaar,’ which offers virtual learning and practical demonstrations on fish breeding and production.
The World Bank-assisted project aims to create digital identities for fishers and farmers, improving extension services, capacity building, and awareness.
