A major study on the use of nano-urea in farming has concluded that it may decrease the yield of rice and wheat, which are essential crops for India.
This finding has raised concerns over the widespread adoption of nano-urea, promoted by IFFCO and the Indian government.
Impact of using Nano-urea
The study found that using nano-urea as directed led to a significant reduction in protein content in rice and wheat (35% and 24%, respectively).
It also noted decreased nitrogen content in both grains and straw, potentially harming long-term crop production and farmer livelihoods if adopted too quickly.
Trials have shown inconsistent results, with some even showing negative impacts on crop growth, particularly in root development, which is essential for nutrient uptake.
