ISRO’s 100th launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota will take place with the GSLV-F15 mission.
ISRO brief history
The first launch, on August 10, 1979, involved the Satellite Launch Vehicle-3 (SLV-3 E10), carrying the Rohini Technology Payload.
It was only partially successful.
Dr. Kalam, then ISRO’s Director, played a crucial role in the first mission.
Despite initial setbacks, ISRO succeeded with the SLV-3E2 mission in 1980, placing the Rohini satellite (RS-1) into orbit.
ISRO has conducted various missions, including 62 PSLV, 16 GSLV, and 7 LVM3 launches.
Sriharikota was chosen for its optimal features like proximity to the equator and large safety zones.
Landmark Missions:
Chandrayaan-1 (2008): India’s first lunar mission.
Chandrayaan-2 (2019): GSLV-Mk III launched this mission.
Chandrayaan-3 (2023): First successful polar moon landing.
Mars Orbiter (2013): India’s first interplanetary mission.
Aditya-L1 (2023): Mission to study the sun.
In 2017, PSLV-C37 launched 104 satellites in one mission, setting a record until SpaceX surpassed it with 143 satellites in 2021.
There have been setbacks, such as failures in the GSLV-F02 (2006), GSLV-D3 (2010), GSLV-F06 (2010), and GSLV-F10 (2021).
