A 30-year-old man with the rare Bombay blood group underwent a successful kidney transplant, where his mother donated her kidney, despite their differing blood types.
This groundbreaking procedure used cross-blood transplant techniques previously unexplored for Bombay blood group patients
What is Bombay blood
The Bombay blood group (HH) is a rare blood type discovered in Mumbai in 1952.
It lacks the H antigen, which is necessary for the formation of A and B antigens in other blood types (like O, A, B).
People with this blood group cannot receive blood or organs from any other blood type, including O, as they have anti-H antibodies.
It affects about 0.0004% of the global population, making it extremely rare, especially difficult for patients to find compatible donors.
