Livestock Census 2024
India’s 21st Livestock Census aims to collect data on 16 species of animals, which will help shape policies for sustainable growth in the livestock sector.
The census will count 16 species, including cattle, buffaloes, and poultry, with 1 lakh enumerators gathering data using a special app.
For the first time, the census will also highlight the role of women in animal farming, who make up over 70% of livestock rearers.
The census will provide updated data to help address issues like disease control, breed improvement, and rural livelihoods.
The census reflects the impact of COVID-19 on livestock farming and highlights concerns like the decline in camel and donkey populations, while poultry numbers have risen.
Needs
Farmers hope the census will lead to better support, such as the establishment of a dairy or milk collection center in their area.
The farmers also seek better information on cattle care, such as medication dosages, and hope the government will increase subsidies for buffaloes.
Challenges for Farmers
Farmers face difficulties such as rising fodder costs and the need for better healthcare for animals.
The government has provided subsidies for cattle care and shelters but farmers urge more focus on animal healthcare and better support for the sector.
