Why in news
A study commissioned by the Delhi government found microplastics in groundwater samples across Delhi, marking the first of its kind.
Microplastics were detected in groundwater from almost all 11 districts and also in the Yamuna River's water and soil, suggesting contamination from the river.
An interim report was submitted last November, but the Delhi government has not yet made it public. The final report is expected later this year.
Microplastic Impact
Microplastics, defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, are associated with serious health risks, especially for women, including genetic, respiratory, and developmental issues.
Microplastics can absorb harmful chemicals, making them more toxic.
There is no established safe limit for microplastics.
Case of Delhi
A 2017 study found microplastics in Delhi's tap water, and current water treatment systems cannot filter them out.
Environmental experts urge the Delhi government to release the study’s findings to aid further research on solutions.
The study, conducted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), is ongoing with data from both pre- and post-monsoon periods being analyzed.
