The saffron reedtail damselfly was spotted for the first time in Karnataka by two naturalists
This discovery extends the known range of the species to the northern part of the Western Ghats, specifically near the Nethravati river in Madhugundi village, Chikkamagaluru district.
Previously, this species was found only in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Saffron reedtail (Indosticta deccanensis)
The species is known for its saffron-colored bodies, hence the name "saffron reedtail."
They belong to the family Platystictidae, also known as shadow damselflies.
These damselflies are found near slow-moving, pristine forest streams and are sensitive to water pollution, making their presence an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.
It is a rare species endemic to the Western Ghats of India.
