Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. offered to remove the U.S. Typhon mid-range missile system if China halts aggressive actions in the South China Sea.
The U.S. installed the missile system in April 2023 in northern Philippines as part of a military alliance with Manila to enhance combat readiness.
China has repeatedly demanded the removal, arguing that the system escalates geopolitical tensions and triggers an arms race.
Typhon, also commonly referred to as the "Strategic Mid-range Fires System" (SMRF), is a United States Army transporter erector launcher for Standard SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles.
Formerly known as the Midrange Capabilities System (MCS), it has since been renamed to the Strategic Mid-range Fires System (SMRF) and given the designation "Typhon"
