Why in news
The Election Commission (EC) clarified that a person can only vote in the constituency where they are enrolled, regardless of their elector photo identity card (EPIC) number.
There were reports of some voters having the same EPIC number in different states. This was due to a past manual system of issuing voter ID numbers.
The EC promised to fix this issue by ensuring that each voter receives a unique EPIC number.
Although some people had identical EPIC numbers, their other details (like constituency and polling booth) were different, meaning it didn’t affect their eligibility to vote.
Background of the Issue
The problem arose from a decentralized system before the introduction of the ERONET platform, which now manages voter rolls online.
West Bengal’s CM, Mamata Banerjee, accused the BJP of adding voters from other states to the West Bengal voter list for the 2026 Assembly elections, with EC's help.
The EC is updating the ERONET platform to ensure unique EPIC numbers and fix any duplicate numbers in the voter list.
