India and New Zealand are restarting free trade agreement talks after a 10-year break.
The goal is to increase trade and market access for both countries.
Current Trade: Bilateral trade has been growing, exceeding $1 billion between April 2024 and January 2025.
A major challenge is the difference in tariffs:
New Zealand has very low tariffs (average 2.3%), while India's are much higher (average 17.8%)
New Zealand wants more access to India's dairy market, which India is resisting.
India has resisted lowering tariffs on New Zealand's dairy, meat, and wine.
India wants easier movement of its skilled workers and better access for its IT sector.
External pressures from the U.S. on India's agricultural sector could affect the talks.
