Jammu and Kashmir aims to promote Bangus, a remote tourist spot near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir, as an ecotourism destination.
The move comes due to uncontrolled growth in popular tourist areas like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg, which has threatened the environment.
The government plans to avoid large-scale construction of hotels and buildings to maintain ecological balance in Bangus.
Basic infrastructure like recreational spaces, rain shelters, lighting, signages, waste disposal, and public conveniences will be developed.
Bangus is located about 100 km from Srinagar, with two valleys at an altitude of 10,000 feet.
It is in Kupwara district, close to other tourist spots near the LoC.
The Deputy Commissioner, Kupwara, will work with the Forest Department to identify land for development.
The government is promoting paying guest houses run by locals, helping preserve culture and offering tourists an immersive experience. Currently, 19 guest houses are registered.
The government has been cracking down on illegal constructions in popular tourist areas, with 269 unauthorized constructions issued notices in Pahalgam over the last two years.
