Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Sri Lanka in early April
His visit will include bilateral meetings in Colombo and the launch of a solar power plant project in Sampur, a joint venture between Ceylon Electricity Board and National Thermal Power Corporation of India.
Sources suggest Modi might transit through Colombo before or after attending the BIMSTEC summit in Thailand.
Modi’s visit is a response to an invitation from Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who visited India in December 2024.
Modi has visited Sri Lanka three times before, with his most recent visit in 2019.
Key issues discussed during Dissanayake's visit included regional security, digital infrastructure, energy projects, and the Palk Bay fisheries conflict.
Modi will be the first foreign head of government to visit Sri Lanka since Dissanayake's rise to power in late 2024.
Meanwhile, China’s Pan Yue visited Sri Lanka recently to discuss ethnic reconciliation and cultural cooperation.
