Why in news
The government has approved a new six-lane highway in Maharashtra.
It will connect JNPA port (NH 348) (Pagote village) to Chowk, a distance of about 29 kilometers.
The project's cost is ₹4,500 crore.
It will be built using the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model.
This project is part of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan to improve port connectivity.
The highway is needed due to increasing container traffic at JNPA and the new Navi Mumbai Airport.
The new highway will improve logistics and reduce travel time.
It will connect to major highways like the Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH-48), and the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66).
The highway will include two tunnels to avoid hilly terrain and improve travel for trucks.
