Tavasya, the last of four Krivak-class stealth frigates, was launched on Saturday at Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL).
The launch was conducted by Ms. Neeta Seth in the presence of Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth.
The launch marks a defining moment in India’s naval history, showcasing technological capabilities and commitment to self-reliance.
Strategic Importance: The localisation of various onboard systems strengthens India’s strategic defence ambitions.
Triput, the first of the two frigates built at GSL, was launched in July 2023.
GSL will deliver, The first ship in 2026.
The second ship six months later.
India-Russia Agreement (2016):
Four follow-on stealth frigates planned.
Two imported directly, two built by GSL under technology transfer.
Contracts Signed: $1 billion for two frigates (direct purchase).
$500 million (Nov 2018) between GSL and Rosoboronexport for materials, design, and assistance.
Engines: All ships powered by Zorya-Mashproekt (Ukraine).
Russian-Built Ships: INS Tushil was commissioned on Dec 9, 2024, and reached Karwar on Feb 14, 2025.
Tamal is in advanced trials and expected to be commissioned in June 2025.
