Why in news
Kausar Jahan, chairperson of the Delhi Haj Committee, defended the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, saying it will bring transparency and accountability to Waqf Boards.
The Bill, introduced last year, was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for bipartisan support.
The government claims the amendments will streamline the regulation of Waqf properties, but opposition parties argue it encroaches on Muslim rights.
Jahan highlighted misuse and cronyism, such as the failure to pay salaries to imams and mismanagement of funds, as reasons for the amendments.
