The GenomeIndia project sequenced the genomes of 10,074 individuals from 85 Indian populations (32 tribal and 53 non-tribal).
The project aimed to identify rare genetic variants important for understanding complex diseases.
Genomic data from 9,772 individuals (4,696 men, 5,076 women) were analyzed, with data stored at the Indian Biological Data Centre, Faridabad, Haryana.
The sequenced genomes included different tribes and non-tribal populations like Tibeto-Burman, Indo-European, Dravidian, and others.
A total of 180 million genetic variants were identified, some associated with diseases, and some unique to India or specific communities.
Researchers are analyzing the functional relevance of these variants, aiming to develop low-cost diagnostic tools and personalized medicine for India.
The project is expected to enhance disease diagnostics and improve precision medicine efforts in the country.
