ISRO used its satellites to estimate wheat production in 8 major wheat-growing Indian states.
The estimated total wheat production as of March 31, 2025, is 122.724 million tonnes.
ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) developed a system called Comprehensive Remote Sensing Observation on Crop Progress (CROP) to monitor crop sowing and harvesting in near real-time during the Rabi season.
The system uses data from satellites like EOS-04, EOS-06, and Resourcesat-2A.
The main wheat-producing states are Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Satellite data shows the wheat crop covers 330.8 lakh hectares across India as of March 31, 2025.
This area closely matches government estimates from February 2025.
Wheat production estimates are based on satellite-derived crop area, sowing dates, and crop condition data.
These are fed into a crop simulation model at a 5×5 km resolution to improve accuracy.
This multi-source data integration supports more precise and large-scale production forecasting.
