Crude birth rates (live births per 1,000 people in the population) in Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Kerala are declining at twice the national average rate, according to the Sample Registration System (SRS) 2021 report.
Nationally, the birth rate declined by 1.12% annually from 2016 to 2021, while Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Kerala saw declines at rates of 2.35%, 2.23%, and 2.05%, respectively.
States like Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh saw the slowest declines in birth rates, ranging from 0.48% to 1.09%.
Uttarakhand was the only state to see an increase in birth rates during this period.
The SRS 2021 data showed faster-than-average declines in 13 states, including all southern states.
Some states with slower declines in birth rates, like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, are seeing increases in registered births.
States with higher-than-average total fertility rates (TFR) and gross reproduction rates (GRR) include Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
