Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu.
Justice Gavai’s tenure will last over six months, until November 23.
He was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bombay High Court in May 2019.
Justice Gavai is the first Buddhist to become Chief Justice of India.
He was born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, and his father, Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai, was a former Governor and Dalit leader.
He was part of key Supreme Court decisions, including upholding the abrogation of Article 370 and striking down the electoral bonds scheme.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and became a Permanent Judge in 2005.
