Why in news
A cholera outbreak in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, has killed 70 people in just two days.
Health officials reported 942 new cases and 25 deaths on Wednesday, after 1,177 cases and 45 deaths on Tuesday.
89% of patients in isolation centres are recovering, but poor environmental conditions are worsening the situation.
Recent drone strikes, blamed on the paramilitary RSF, disrupted water and electricity in the city, contributing to the spread.
Cholera is common in Sudan, but outbreaks have become more severe and frequent since the war began.
Since August 2024, over 65,000 cholera cases and 1,700 deaths have been reported in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.
