Why in news
The Madras High Court stayed changes made by the Tamil Nadu Assembly that gave the State government the power to appoint Vice-Chancellors instead of the Governor.
The stay was granted by a vacation bench based on a PIL filed by advocate K. Venkatachalapathy, who sought to declare the amendments null and void.
The petitioner argued the laws clash with UGC regulations, particularly Regulation 7.3 on Vice-Chancellor appointments.
The State government opposed the stay, saying there was no urgency and asked for more time to respond.
The court refused to delay and proceeded with granting the interim stay.
The government also claimed the PIL was politically motivated, pointing out the petitioner is a BJP district secretary.
