India has banned import of ready-made garments from Bangladesh through land ports.
These items can now enter only through Kolkata and Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) ports with strict inspection.
The decision follows Bangladesh restricting Indian yarn exports through land ports.
Bangladesh also recently blocked Indian rice exports via key land ports.
India is responding by placing similar port restrictions on Bangladeshi exports.
Other restricted items include plastic, wooden furniture, juices, drinks, bakery products, cotton yarn, and dyes.
Most of these products can be made in India, especially in the Northeast.
Around 93% of Bangladesh's garment exports to India come via land ports.
India aims to protect local industries and counter trade imbalance.
The move also responds to Bangladesh’s recent remarks inviting China to access India’s Northeast through Bangladeshi ports.
