India has proposed imposing tariffs on $7.6 billion worth of U.S. imports in response to the U.S. raising tariffs on steel and aluminum to 25%.
India notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) on May 9, 2025, about these proposed retaliatory measures, which could start in 30 days.
The issue began in 2018 when the U.S. imposed higher tariffs on steel and aluminum, and in 2025, the U.S. raised them further without granting exemptions.
India disagrees with the U.S. claiming these tariffs are for national security, stating they are actually safeguard measures that were not properly notified to the WTO.
India argues the U.S. has violated trade agreements and reserves the right to retaliate by raising tariffs on selected U.S. products.
India’s proposed retaliatory tariffs would affect U.S. imports worth $7.6 billion, generating about $1.91 billion in duty revenue.
India previously imposed higher tariffs on U.S. products in 2019 after the U.S. removed India from its Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), but those tariffs were removed in 2023 after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Washington.
