The abrogation of Article 370 and splitting Jammu and Kashmir into UTs required a National Security Strategy (NSS) framework, says Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.
India does not have a written NSS document like some Western countries, but it does have the necessary policy, processes, and organizational structures.
Saying India has no NSS is a misunderstanding, according to Gen. Chauhan.
He points out that Israel, despite being highly threatened, also does not have a written NSS.
Pakistan has a written NSS but lacks the proper organizational structures and processes, which has led to instability.
In 2018, India created a Defence Planning Committee to develop an NSS and National Defence Strategy, but no updates have been shared yet.
Former Army Chief General Manoj Naravane emphasized the need for an NSS, National Defence Strategy, and higher defense organization before forming integrated theatre commands.
