A species of garden lizard called Calotes zolaiking, first described in 2019 in Mizoram, has now been found in Mawmluh, Meghalaya.
This new sighting extends the species' known range by about 172 km.
The discovery was made possible by two local villagers who also co-authored the scientific paper.
The finding has sparked a local conservation movement in Mawmluh and nearby Sohra, areas affected by mining and an old cement plant.
The study involved researchers observing the lizards on bushes in April 2024 and collecting specimens for confirmation.
India has 14 species of Calotes, with nine found in the Northeast.
Scientists stress the need for ongoing surveys in the Khasi Hills, as many species may still be undiscovered or at risk.
The example of Stoliczkia khasiensis, a snake seen only once in 1870, was cited to highlight the risk of losing species without proper research.
