The southwest monsoon has reached Kerala a week earlier than usual.
It arrived on May 25, three days earlier than the IMD's predicted date of May 27.
This is the earliest monsoon onset in Kerala since 2009.
The early onset may have been helped by a pre-cyclonic storm near the Konkan-Goa coast.
The monsoon is expected to move into Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and parts of northeast and east India in the next three days.
Early monsoon in Kerala does not guarantee early rain in the rest of India unless the monsoon currents remain strong.
In 2009, India had an early monsoon but still ended up with 23% less rainfall than normal.
The IMD has forecast “above normal” rainfall for this year, continuing last year’s trend.
