Key Highlights from the News
On July 3, 2025, Russia (Russia) officially recognized the Taliban government (Taliban) in Afghanistan. The Taliban refers to this as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan - IEA).
This marks a major shift in Russia's policy, which had maintained a hostile stance towards the Taliban regime from 1996-2001.
This move is based on Russia's belief that the Taliban is an objective reality in Afghanistan and that they are allies in the fight against terrorism, especially against the Islamic State Khorasan Province (Islamic State Khorasan Province - IS-K).
Russia's recognition may encourage Central Asian countries and China to take similar steps.
This could lead to a new diplomatic model that prioritizes pragmatism over values such as the rights of women and minorities.
This move by Russia is unlikely to significantly affect India. India is already improving diplomatic relations with the Taliban.
