Key Highlights from the News
A large study conducted in Denmark found a link between neonatal vitamin D levels and the later risk of mental and neurodevelopmental disorders.
The study states that children with higher vitamin D levels at birth had a lower risk of developing schizophrenia, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and autism.
To prove that this association was not coincidental and that a causal relationship might exist, researchers used advanced genetic methods like Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) and Mendelian Randomisation.
Studies from AIIMS Rishikesh and Bengaluru indicate that despite abundant sunlight in India, vitamin D deficiency is widespread among mothers and newborns.
Indian experts suggest that antenatal supplementation of vitamin D to mothers during pregnancy can be beneficial for the baby's health, especially brain development.
Due to cost and lack of awareness, vitamin D testing during pregnancy is not routine in India.
