Key Highlights from the News
A new scientific study finds that Santorini and Kolumbo, two volcanoes in Greece, share a single magma chamber beneath the Earth.
The continuous earthquakes (swarms of quakes) in this region in January 2025 were caused by magma pushing up from this magma chamber.
By analyzing data from satellites, seismometers, and ground sensors, researchers found that the volume of the magma chamber beneath Kolumbo decreased, while the land in Santorini rose.
This finding provides new insights into the relationship between volcanic activity and earthquakes, and the subterranean structure of volcanoes. 🌋
