SYL canal issue – Punjab and Haryana UPSC NOTE

 Why in news

Supreme Court asked the Union government to conduct a survey of the land allocated for the construction of part of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.

Sutlej-Yamuna Link

  • The focal point of a water-sharing dispute between Haryana and Punjab.

  • Punjab government is not ready spare water with any state.

  • Punjab government says, They are facing water scarcity and the ground water is extraction is 100%.

  • Haryana government says, construction of canal is the rightful entitlement of Haryana people.

Basic Details.

  • Canal running about 121 km in Punjab and 90 km in Haryana.

  • The canal was first proposed in 1966, and construction began in 1982.

  • The SYL Canal is designed to transfer water from the Sutlej River in Punjab to the Yamuna River in Haryana.
