 Why in News

• Eight months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the pan-India rollout of a shorter TB Preventive Treatment (TPT) in March 2023 called the 3HP.

• Once-weekly isoniazid-rifapentine for 12 weeks , States are yet to receive the 3HP combination drug from the Central TB Division. 

• Tamil Nadu and Kerala have already begun using 3HP for TB preventive treatment despite not receiving the drug supply.

3HP

• The 3HP regimen is a new, shorter, and more effective TB preventive treatment (TPT) regimen that was launched in India in March 2023. 

• The 3HP regimen consists of taking isoniazid and rifapentine once a week for 12 weeks. 

• This is a significant improvement over the previous standard of care, which was isoniazid taken daily for six months.

• The 3HP regimen is more effective at preventing TB than the previous standard of care, and it is also more convenient for patients to take. 

• This is because the 3HP regimen is shorter and requires fewer doses. 

• The 3HP regimen is also well-tolerated and has a low risk of side effects.

The 3HP regimen is recommended for all people who are at high risk of developing TB, including:

1. People who have been in close contact with someone with active TB

2. People who have latent TB infection (LTBI)

3. People who are living with HIV

4. People who are using drugs

5. People who are incarcerated

• The 3HP regimen is a safe and effective way to prevent TB.
