National dam safety team faults planning, design of Kaleshwaram project’s barrage in Telangana.
National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA)
NDSA is a statutory body established under the Dam Safety Act, 2021.
NDSA will ensure the safety of dams in India.
It is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The NDSA is responsible for:
Developing and implementing national dam safety policies and guidelines
Overseeing the implementation of dam safety laws and regulations
Conducting dam safety inspections and audits.
Providing technical assistance and support to state dam safety organizations.
Coordinating with other government agencies and stakeholders on dam safety matters.
The NDSA is headed by a Chairman and has five members.
Responsible for a different aspect of dam safety, such as policy and research, technical, regulation, disaster resilience, and administration and finance.
The NDSA is committed to ensuring the safety of dams in India and protecting the lives and livelihoods of people living downstream of dams.
Kaleshwaram project
The Kaleshwaram project is a mega irrigation and drinking water project in the Godavari River basin,Telangana.
It is the largest irrigation project in Telangana and one of the largest in India.
The project consists of a series of dams, canals, and reservoirs.
The main dam is the Kaleshwaram Barrage, which is located on the Godavari River in the Karimnagar district.
The barrage diverts water from the Godavari River into a series of canals that irrigate over 1.2 million hectares of land in Telangana.

The project also provides drinking water to over 2.5 million people in Telangana.
The Kaleshwaram project is a flagship project of the Telangana government, boost agricultural production, improve drinking water availability, and generate employment in Telangana
