Located in Surat, Gujarat,on the banks of the Tapi River.
One of the largest nuclear power plants in India, with a total installed capacity of 3,000 MW.
Consists of four operational units (KAPP 1&2 of 220 MW each, and KAPP 3&4 of 700 MW each), with nine more units under construction and another 10 in the pre-project phase.
Plays a significant role in meeting India's growing energy demand and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
KAPP-4 achieved criticality on December 17, 2023, marking a significant milestone in India's nuclear energy program.
The remaining units under construction are expected to be commissioned in the coming years, further increasing KAPP's capacity and contribution to the national grid.
Why in news
The 700-MWe units of the project are the largest nuclear power reactors to be built by NPCIL; criticality was ascertained after it met the conditions set out by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
