  • Boys and girls in Haryana have taken to Kalaripayattu, largely practised and trained in Kerala and now treated as a sport.

  • After its introduction to the Khelo India games in 2021, along with three other forms: gatka, mallakhamb, thang-ta.

Kalaripayattu basic details

  • Kalaripayattu is an Indian martial art that originated in Kerala.

  • It is considered one of the oldest martial arts in the world.

  • Historians says dating its origins back to the 3rd century BC.

  • Kalaripayattu is a complete martial art that includes training in unarmed combat, weapons, and healing. 

  • It is also a highly spiritual art form that emphasizes the development of the mind, body, and spirit.

Basic details of Kalaripayattu:

  • Origin: Kerala, India

  • History: Over 2,000 years old

  • Training: Includes unarmed combat, weapons, and healing

  • Philosophy: Emphasizes the development of the mind, body, and spirit

  • Weapons: Urumi (sword), Kathi (dagger), Cheruvu (spear), Gada (mace), Dhanush (bow and arrow)
