  • 29 Maoists were killed in an operation by security forces at Kanker district in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region 

  • The operation by a joint team of the Kanker District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Border Security Force (BSF) against the Maoists took place in a forested area which falls under the Chhottebetiya police station area of Kanker

  • Three senior cadres of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) are suspected to be among the deceased.

Left wing extremism and steps taken

  • Left-wing extremism, also known as left-wing terrorism or radical left-wing movements, refers to political ideologies and groups that advocate for significant societal and political change through revolutionary means.

  • LWE organizations are the groups that try to bring change through violent revolution. 

  • They are against democratic institutions and use violence to subvert the democratic processes at the ground level

  • LWE groups may target government institutions, law enforcement agencies, or private property to further their agenda.

Left wing extremism and steps taken

  • The origins of the LWE can be traced back to 1967 in the three areas of Naxalbari , Phansidewa and Khoribari in West Bengal's Darjeeling District. 

  • The initial uprising was led by Charu Majumdar, Kanu Sanyal and Jangal Santhal, who were members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)

  • SAMADHAN doctrine is the one-stop solution for the LWE problem. 

  • It encompasses the entire strategy of government from short-term policy to long-term policy formulated at different levels. 

  • SAMADHAN stands for:

S- Smart Leadership;  A- Aggressive Strategy; 

M- Motivation and Training;  A- Actionable Intelligence;  D- Dashboard Based KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and KRAs (Key Result Areas);  H- Harnessing Technology;  A- Action plan for each Theatre;  N- No access to Financing


  • Kanker District is located in the southern region of the state of Chhattisgarh, India

  • In 106 AD, the Kanker state was under the rule of the Satvahana dynasty and the king was Satkarni, 

  • This fact is also described by Chinese visitor Whensaung. 

  • After Satvahana rule, the state was under the control of the Nags, Vakataks, Gupt, Nal and Chalukya dynasties


  • The Mahanadi River, Doodh River, Hatkul River, Sondur River and Turu River all flow through small pockets of hills in the district.
