Hypertension - A Silent Killer:
It's a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and death, causing millions of deaths globally each year.
Many people are unaware they have it until complications arise.
The Problem in India:
Estimated 311 million adults in India have hypertension (1 in 3).
Low awareness, detection, and treatment rates.
High salt consumption is a major contributor.
A Successful Initiative - Indian Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI):
Launched by the Indian government to manage hypertension.
Uses simple treatment protocols, reliable medication supply, and patient-centered care.
Shows promising results in increasing access to treatment.
What is the IHCI?
The programme was launched in November 2017
In the first year, IHCI covered 26 districts across five States — Punjab, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra.
By December 2020, IHCI was expanded to 52 districts across ten States — Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and West Bengal.
The Health Ministry, the Indian Council of Medical Research, State Governments, and WHO-India began a five-year initiative to monitor and treat hypertension.
India has committed to a "25 by 25" goal.
The goal aims to reduce premature mortality due to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025.
One of the nine voluntary targets includes reducing the prevalence of high blood pressure by 25% by 2025.
The Way Forward:
Raise awareness about hypertension and its risks.
Scale up successful programs like IHCI.
Address non-modifiable risk factors like family history and age.
Reduce dietary salt intake through various strategies.
Take multi-sectoral actions to promote healthy lifestyles.
Empower people with information about salt content in food.
Strengthen food regulations and promote healthy food choices.
Encourage regular blood pressure checks for everyone.
