The Yamuna river water is expected to arrive soon in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region following an agreement signed recently with the Haryana government
The agreement with Haryana adheres to the 1994 Yamuna Water Agreement.
The Chaudhary Kumbharam Lift Canal, built under the Indira Gandhi Canal Project, at present supplies 1,500 cusecs of water to some areas of Shekhawati.
Yamuna
The Yamuna River is one of the major tributaries of the Ganges in Northern India.
It forms an integral part of the Yamuna-Ganga Plain, one of the world's most extensive alluvial plains.
It has its source in the Yamunotri Glacier at an elevation of 6,387 meters on the southwestern sides of Banderpooch crests in the lower Himalayan ranges.
It meets the Ganges at the Sangam (where Kumbh mela is held) in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh after flowing through Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.
Important Dam: Lakhwar-Vyasi Dam (Uttarakhand), Tajewala Barrage Dam (Haryana) etc.
Important Tributaries: Chambal, Sindh, Tons, Betwa and Ken.
Choudhary Kumbha Ram Canal
Choudhary Kumbha Ram Canal project was inaugurated on 15 July 2013.
The project aims to deliver freshwater to Rajasthan.
It was built under Indira Gandhi canal Project.
Two reservoirs in Malsisar village of Jhunjhunu are also built for the same.
Hanumangarh and Churu districts of Rajasthan benefited from the Kumbharam lift project.
Indira Gandhi canal project
Indira Gandhi Canal is the longest canal in India,
It starts from Harike Barrage near Harike a few kilometers downriver from the confluence of the Satluj and Beas rivers
Ends at the irrigation facilities in the Thar desert in northwest Rajasthan.
The Indira Gandhi Canal was earlier known as the Rajasthan canal.
The name of the canal was changed in the year 1984 on 2nd November, following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The canal consists of Rajasthan feeder canals.
The first 167 Kilometres are from Punjab and Haryana, and the further 37 kilometers are in Rajasthan.
This is followed by the main Rajasthan canal which is 445 kilometers. (Total length - 650km)
