Child marriages in India have dropped significantly from 47.4% to 23.3% between 2006 and 2019-21, thanks to the Prevention of Child Marriage Act.
In the past year, around 200,000 child marriages were prevented.
Reports from the UN show South Asia, with India as a major contributor, has seen the biggest global decline in child marriage rates.
Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Abhiyan
The government has launched the 'Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' (Child Marriage-Free India Campaign), aiming to end child marriage in the country.
The campaign will focus on 7 states with the highest child marriage rates: West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Tripura, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh.
States and Union Territories are asked to create action plans to reduce child marriage rates below 5% by 2029.
The 'Child Marriage Free Bharat' portal has been launched to raise awareness, report cases, and track progress.
