20,000 pompano fingerlings (baby fish) were released into the sea off Vizhinjam as part of a marine conservation effort.
This release is part of an ongoing project to create artificial reefs in the sea, aimed at replenishing marine fish populations and promoting sustainable fishing.
Sea Ranching Project is a part of the State Fisheries Department's initiative to release 10 lakh pompano and cobia (Motha) fingerlings at 10 locations off the Thiruvananthapuram coast.
The project is funded by the Central Government under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with ₹3 crore allocated for this effort.
Artificial reefs were created at 42 locations along 33 fishing villages, which have already attracted various fish species like tuna, trevally, and mackerel.
